These original artworks have a unique luminous quality that is absolutely captivating and are bound to start a conversation among those who see them! You can see my current work on display at Art Gallery of SnoValley and Parklane Gallery.
From an early age, I was fascinated by the natural world—its mysteries and beauty. This intrigue inspired me to travel the globe, exploring the many spectacular gifts of our planet. My initial artistic mediums were photography, sketching, and oils. However, I was introduced to encaustic art in 2018 and was immediately captivated by this dynamic and tactile medium. By working with layers of hot liquid beeswax and fusing them with fire, I create pigmented textures and luminous effects that are both impactful and captivating. Each piece is a challenge to create and may contain up to 30 layers, all brought together with the heat of my blowtorch. I invite you to explore the depth and beauty of my creations, where the ancient tradition of encaustic art meets innovation to create contemporary works.
In general, I approach my art in one of two ways. For my mixed-media pieces, I start by creating an underpainting on a birch wood art board. In these unique works I utilize inks, watercolor, pastels, and tools like Posca pens for detailed touches. I often incorporate specialty surfaces such as beeswax foundation sheets, handmade paper, or maps to add texture, depth, and interest. I then fuse hot encaustic medium (a combination of beeswax and damar resin) into the piece to enhance its depth and create a rich, luminous appearance.
For my pure encaustic works, which lean toward the abstract, I use molten encaustic medium colored with various pigments, layering it on the birch wood surface. Each layer is applied and then fused with a blowtorch or heat gun. I also employ a technique known as "shellac burn," where I paint different colors of shellac onto the wax surface and then use my blowtorch to create a webbing effect. This process involves up to 30 layers of wax to achieve the desired depth and luminance, making it a laborious yet thrillingly beautiful endeavor.
I frame my work in high-quality wood floater frames, as shown in the video. Please explore my gallery below to view a small sampling of the hundreds of pieces I have created over the past few years. Some of these works are currently available for sale.
